Walmart Coupon Policy

Walmart logo

Customer Service: 1-800-Walmart (1-800-925-6278) or email here!

  • Does Walmart have a current coupon policy?

YES. Read or print the Walmart Coupon Policy and the Walmart Price Match Policy.

  • Does Walmart accept internet printable coupons?

YES, but does NOT accept “FREE” internet printable coupons.

  • Does Walmart accept FREE product coupons or Buy 1 Get 1 FREE Coupons?

YES, but the “FREE” coupons will NOT be accepted if they are internet printed coupons. Must have been mailed to you directly from the company, from a newspaper, magazine etc.

  • Does Walmart accept coupons with a greater value than the price of the item?

YES. For example, if you have a coupon for $3 off product A and product A only costs $2.50, Walmart WILL pay you $0.50 to purchase the item (with your coupon) or the $0.50 may be applied toward the cost of your total purchase.

  • Does Walmart accept competitors coupons?

YES, but only if the coupons states an exact price like for example Product A for $2.99. Walmart DOES NOT accept competitor coupons with a dollar/cents/percentage off.

  • Does Walmart price-match competitor current weekly ads?

YES. If your Walmart is within 5 miles of the competitor, you will no longer need to bring in the actual ad. If you Walmart is further than 5 miles from the competitor, you will need to bring in the actual ad. All local or lesser-known stores will likely require an ad for a price-match.

I would like to let everyone know that the WalMart in my area will not accept internet printed coupons unless they are in FULL COLOR and have been printed with yellow dots all over the inside of the expiration date box. From what I understand by talking to the employees, this is a company policy. So, even if the rest of the coupon is in color, they will not accept it unless it has those yellow dots in the expiration date box.

in walmarts coupon policy it says Are acceptable in black and white or color, just so you, might want to print that out and take it with you

according to a store manager at a Walmart at my location, even my printed coupon policy doesn’t hold any weight as everything is subject to a manager’s discretion. The new policy is that if internet coupons don’t scan, they aren’t allowed to take them. They have to be scanned on the flat scanner, not the handheld scanner. The register prints out a receipt that instructs the cashier to hand back coupons that did not go through. I even overheard CSM’s saying to cashiers that management is strictly enforcing the newer coupon policy and that if anyone uses the vendor coupon that requires a CSM/CSS override, they would be wrote up and if any CSM/CSS approves a coupon override, they would be wrote up as well. Upon calling Bentonville, their public relations person told me that they would pass my complaint on, and that they did state that the store manager does have the final decision in that store and they welcomed me to contact the district manager. The policy is supposed to speed time at the registers as more customers complained about the “extreme couponers” taking hours at a checkout line, especially when the store is understaffed.

I live in Oklahoma city and go into Walmart sometimes as much as 3 and 4 time a week and have YET to see a Walmart FULLYSTAFFED even on sat and Sundays. Most of the time out of 30 to 40 some cases the cash resister that are working is 7 to 9 the rest of the resisters are closed (Not Good). I understand that not all of the resisters can be open but give me a break 7 to 9 come on let go for 10 to 15 open.

Phil, Walmart Coupon policy states local manager has discretion *if there is a question about an individual coupon/or price match. Local managers DO NOT have discretion to change Walmart CORPORATE Coupon policy. Straight from Walmart Corporate when I called them about my local Walmart manager trying to enforce HIS version of Corporate policy. I guess Corporate had enough complaints about this specific Walmart &/or manager…..because he is no longer employed.

I was just at my local walmart and they said that they do not accept coupons of a greater value than the price of the item. Supposedly the cashier talked to the manager and that’s what he told her to tell me. I have written a email to walmart asking them what the correct policy is and I should hear back from them in a few days but as for now they do not give you cash back.

it depends on the coupon now. they literally just changed the policy to be more in line with what is printed on the coupon. if the coupon specifies that it is $1.00 off an 87cent product but tax must be paid it means that the manufacturer wont cover the cost of the tax and walmart cant take it. But if is $1.00 off an 87cent product and it doesn’t specify then they can.

Andrew, YES Walmart Coupon Policy DOES allow overage to be either PAID to customer or applied to rest of purchase. $2.00 off coupon on a $1.50 item…either they hand you cash back (minus the tax on $1.50) OR they apply the 50 cent overage to the rest of your purchase and your tax on the $1.50 item is paid with all remaining purchase amount due. It states so clearly in Walmart coupon policy. And **PER WALMART CORPORATE** local managers DO NOT have the discretion to change Walmart’s Corporate Coupon Policy. I have called Walmart Corporate several times to complain about my local Walmart.

Reply

14 adam August 1, 2012 at 5:58 AM

Probably they changed the policy and no longer offer overage. The one stipulated in their policy is misleading.

Reply

15 T May 16, 2015 at 12:46 PM

Walmart has updated it’s Corporate Coupon Policy 2014 & 2015 **BUT** that part has not changed. Walmart DOES allow overages, and overages CAN be paid to customer as cash back (minus the tax amount of the item price). The policy is not misleading…it’s the local managers who are lying to customers. Call Walmart Corporate and complain!

I was at Wmart on Mansell Rd. (Roswell, GA) tonight- they would NOT accept Smart Source coupon for $1.00/ Splenda (from manufacturers website)… What’s the issue and why do they HAVE TO BE SO RUDE as they can’t answer my question ??

Reply

17 Ryan November 25, 2013 at 9:36 AM

They stopped taking them because there was a lot of fraud, with specifically smart source. People were photoshopping them, and even editing barcodes, so they could get more money off than it was supposed to. Or for the coupon to work with other products than intended. Smart source would not honor them, and walmart lost money on a lot of sales. For instance I have seen coupons for free playstation controllers $59, free beats by dre headphones $100-200, and everything from free soda, to almost free energy drinks. It wasn’t just one or two, but thousands of these fake coupons were spread around the internet and were used in many locations. Most stores would refuse them, but some did get taken. Smart source had no comment, and refused to do anything about it, so they stopped taking them.

The Walmart in (milton,Fl) only will accept coupons that scan most internet coupons have a new code that provides more information and the scanners at walmart here wont read it.
All mine showed up item not found. The cashier and supervisor were rude and told it is most likely because to many coupons are in valid. I told to keep their items, i asked a simple question and even brought the article about it. It is not about the coupons, but that I feel you should treat people with respect if you want their business.

How many “like” coupons can be used? I had 4 coupons… got my 4 like items and was told they will accept them this time but normally can you can only use 1. I’ve never had an issue like this before at walmart ….4 has always been accepted no problem.

Reply

21 Lapis September 1, 2013 at 1:28 AM

It depends on the coupon. Some coupons place limits on them that Walmart must adhere to. For example if you have a coupon that says $1 on silly string and in the fine print it says one per purchase and you have four you can use four coupons. Now if it said $1 off silly string limit one coupon per household and you have four things of silly string still only one coupon can be used. So just remember to read your coupons so you are aware of what is written so you are informed and they can’t surprise you with anything true or false.

Any information would be helpful.

Reply

Walmart ad match policy states that they must match the ad exactly for the amount and price. It goes against current policy to just ring up the items at $1.00 per when the ad says 10 for $10. The following are guidelines and limitations:
We will match any local competitor’s advertised price.
We do not require customers to have the ad with them to honor a competitor’s ad.
Items purchased must be identical to the ad (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc.)

The “competitor’s” coupon (you said Target coupon) must have the price of the item and $ amount off. ie: $3 off 3 Purex Crystals 55 oz when you buy 3 Purex Crystals 55 oz at $3.99 each. **That’s Walmart’s way of **not really** accepting Competitor’s coupons, even though Walmart policy states they accept Competitors coupons (WITH price). Walmart has been getting crappier and crappier (as far as Customer service) ever since Sam Walton died in 1992. Bet Sam’s rolling in his grave at all the RUDE, horrible customer service Walmart’s been dishing out.

I am having an issue with Walmart accepting a coupon. I have a coupon for $ 1.00 off ANY Raid Product. The system does not accept the coupon because the first 5 numbers of the coupon do NOT match the first 5 numbers of the product (this I know myself) but the coupon does state ANY RAID PRODUCT and the Raid Fly Ribbons are $ 1.12. Any ideas how I can get the idiots at Walmart to accept this coupon?

Reply

35 Ro July 3, 2013 at 11:28 AM

Speak with the manager. The wording on the coupon means pretty much everything, so if it’s for ANY it works on ANY Raid Product.

Reply

36 Lapis September 1, 2013 at 1:35 AM

Not a clue why they refuse but ask for a Customer Service Manager (CSM) when this comes up. Often times the coupons are coded in a strange way and the computer doesn’t recognize it for whatever reason. However most CSMs will be understanding or should be understanding that it is the fault of the company and not the consumer for printing the coupon is such a stupid way. There are even some coupons that say they expire on a future date but ring up expired and coupons that come off of items in the store for that item and they refuse to take.

2. For BOGO, can I use a coupon for both the purchase item and free item?

Reply

41 Terri May 16, 2015 at 12:32 PM

to Tammy… Walmart does NOT issue any “Walmart Store Coupons”. For BOGO question: The BOGO coupon attaches (is linked) to both the items, therefore you can not use a coupon for “cents off” when using a BOGO coupon. I have never seen Walmart have anything on sale for BOGO **BUT IF Walmart did**…then yes, you would be able to use (1) “cents off 1” (.50/1) coupon during a BOGO SALE. You can not use a “cents off 2” during a BOGO sale. You can never use a coupon on a FREE item.

Walmart will no longer take a coupon rejected by the register even if I pull the groceries out and show the cashier. I used to spend at least $1,000 per month at Walmart for my family of five but I have stopped shopping there because of the needless harassment when it comes to coupons. Publix takes ALL competitor coupons, manufacturer coupons, digital coupons, and in-store coupons on their BOGO’s every week. I save a ton of money and I don’t have the hassle.

I was at a Walmart here in Virginia today and had a perfectly legit coupon (onto new white copy paper) from Walmart.com, for a product that only Walmart carries (a brand of chicken) and when the coupon would not scan, I was informed of this very policy. I felt like a fool because it seemed like after that none of the employees really wanted anything to do with me. The checkout lady said she could not accept the coupon and said that other people were having trouble with coupons off of Walmart.com. When I went to the returns counter to get the coupon cashed, the lady said a manager would help me. She stuck around and straightened the area. And a couple of the floor runners were coming around behind the counter. Finally after waiting for a good five minutes, there were her and three other employees in the help desk area and I asked her, “well is anybody coming.” And she asked one of the young boys, “do you have the register key?” Finally in that slow moving, Oh your request is killing us, Walmart slack, she handed over my dollar. I say forget coupons on Walmart.com and forget their stupid eMails where they tell you “Thank you for being our customer! 🙂 Yes with the smiley face. I already stopped Kroger eMail for their sometimes the eCoupons work and sometimes not nonsense. So forget Walmart, they seem to have forgotten how to deal with their own over extended processes, and how to deal with real customers. Even taking a survey about the experience, it seems nothing else mattered than the store being clean and in position. Walmart doesn’t care about the customer saving money anymore or the interaction with people. Sorry Sam (Walton).

The coupons on walmart.com are NOT Walmart store coupons, despite what they falsely lead the public to believe (listing page as “In-Store” coupons). They are the same manufacturer coupons that can be printed on coupons.com . Walmart does NOT even issue any Walmart-Store-Coupons…they don’t exist.

46 Rayne February 16, 2016 at 12:13 AM

I, too, had Walmart coupons, I had printed off of coupons.com and was denied redeeming them because they would not scan. I was informed they no longer accepted coupons printed from computers, only manufacturer coupons would be accepted. heaven forbid my measly $4.75 in coupons would cause them to go broke. I was told it was due to fraudulent coupons, for instance, the same coupon printed repeatedly fro the original! This I am able to comprehend, yet, I was then treated as if I were one of “those” people and treated as such. I would never try to obtain such dishonestly and was slightly offended when treated so rudely even after I thanked them for the information. However, their savings catcher app, which I use as well, cannot process a receipt that does not print clearly enough to even type the info in when it is un-scannable!!! When I contacted the store to request my receipt info was informed that to do that would be too much trouble. They advertise such things yet find any way they can to get out of honoring what it is they advertise. I am not sure how I intend to make the masses know this information but fully intend to do so.

The manager came over and said , we do not accept this, There was no explanation as to the reason why. The cashier said that they had a meeting and was told not to accept the coupons anymore. When i asked cashier to clarify which type of coupon they were reffering to, she politely told me that she would get another manager to break it down for me. i told her that i would go online and read about it myself. Some of the manager at Walmart have no sense of managerial ability and should not be managing anything but a pig. The coupon was for $1.50 off 100fl ounces tide and the tide were on sale for $9.87.

The coupons on Walmart’s web site are NOT Walmart coupons. They are the same coupons as you find on coupons.com They are Manufacturer’s coupons that you can use ANYWHERE that accepts internet print coupons. Walmart does NOT issue and “Walmart Store Coupons”. Even the coupons that have the Walmart advertising logo are NOT Walmart coupons! (or logo for Dollar General, Walgreen’s, Family Dollar, etc) they are Mfr coupons and can be used anywhere.

I don’t understand how a company can be one way with one person and another way with another person. I have even called corporate and still nothing gets done. Walmart needs to get with all employees and make sure they are all on the same page with the coupon policy and treat every shopper the same.

Lacey, you are not the only one. I had to call Walmart customer service last week. While each store reserves the right to pretty make up/limit the coupon policy, it’s frustrating that almost every cashier I’ve been at many different stores can’t price match without having to call a manager, hold up the lines, and waste a lot of my time. I always come prepared with the ads on my phone but that never seems to be enough. Nowadays I try to only price-match a handful of items or else I’ll be there forever!

Reply

63 Lacey February 1, 2016 at 12:02 AM

Yes it is frustrating. I always have my ads also and the coupon policy with me. I understand that each store is different as far as the coupon policy but to give certain people the ok to price match and use whatever coupons is unfair to everyone else that tries to do the same. I’ve been in some arguments also with some of the cashiers, they just need to treat everyone the same. It’s disappointing.

My closest Walmart would not accept manufacturing coupons (Not Printed) for an item that even the cashier admitted was covered. It was between the weight limit and had the correct number of items, but did not want to scan. Another guy told her to not even put it in because it would be his *** if something was said and then he’d yell at her. He was really rude to me and my family as well. At the end he said it was probably because the candy was in a box and not a bag. This was not specified on the coupon one way or another. He just flat out refused to help and they said their wasn’t anyone else to talk to.

I sent an email complaining, mostly about his behavior toward us and when the store manager called I told him what happened. I told him my coupons were not printed, but he kept spewing the if it doesn’t scan we don’t accept them. As far as I know that is not in the policy for coupons right out of the paper, but I did tell him I have no issues with other Walmarts and have been and will continue to go out of my way to go somewhere else instead. We’ve had many issues at this Walmart. A 20-30 minute drive is worth being treated like a person for me.

Bull, Walmart Management/employees, need to be on the same page. Everybody need to take coupon one on one classes. So I went to another Walmart, they took the coupon. Till this day, this is the only Walmart that doesn’t take buy one get one free coupons. This one manager, is horrible. So I go elsewhere, to save myself the argument and the embarrassment. On this matter, there is to many complaints. Walmart is a mega giant in this industry. You would think that they would have it together. Management should know how, to read a coupon, some don’t. They will get pissed or frustrated, and flat out say, I can’t except this coupon. Some people live, by couponing. Make it right Walmart.
